Commitments

Our principles describe what we believe. Our commitments describe how we seek to put those principles into practice.

Introduction

We recognize that good intentions are not enough. We also recognize that meaningful work is never done perfectly from the beginning.

We will make mistakes. We will learn hard lessons. Some ideas will not work as expected. Some projects will need to be changed, paused, rebuilt, or abandoned. This does not mean the mission has failed. It means we are learning.

We do not believe perfection should prevent action. Great things are not built in a day. They are built through truth, humility, courage, discipline, experimentation, correction, perseverance, and continual improvement.

We are committed to pursuing a better future with honesty about where we are today and faithfulness toward what we believe can be built.

Our commitments

Commitment 1

We act before everything is perfect.

We will not allow the pursuit of perfection to stop us from doing good.

We believe responsible action, learning, and improvement are better than endless planning without service. We will seek wisdom, count the cost, and act carefully, but we will also move forward with courage.

When we fail, we will learn.
When we learn, we will improve.
When we improve, we will keep building.

Commitment 2

We pursue truth through action and correction.

We will seek truth in research, communication, decision-making, and results.

Truth is not only something we affirm in words. It is something we pursue through testing, building, measuring, listening, learning, and correcting.

If evidence shows that one of our methods is ineffective, harmful, wasteful, or misaligned with our mission, we will be willing to revise it, stop it, or replace it.

Commitment 3

We collaborate across backgrounds, nations, and beliefs.

We believe the future of artificial intelligence should not be shaped by only one nation, culture, ideology, discipline, or group of people.

The challenges facing humanity are too large for isolated work. To build AI that serves people, creates opportunity, protects life, supports renewable energy, and cares for the Earth, people from many backgrounds must work together.

We will seek collaboration with educators, researchers, businesses, civic leaders, nonprofits, technologists, builders, volunteers, and communities around the world.

We do not require agreement on every philosophical, political, or religious question. We do seek a shared commitment to constructive work, human dignity, truth, responsible innovation, and positive impact.

Commitment 4

We communicate vision honestly.

We believe in the power of vision.

Many good things begin as ideas, dreams, prototypes, prayers, conversations, and possibilities before they become reality. A better future must often be seen before it can be built.

We will speak boldly about what we are pursuing, while doing our best to be honest about what has already been achieved, what is still being built, what is experimental, and what remains uncertain.

We will not be afraid to describe what we are working to become.

Commitment 5

We build AI to expand human capability and meaningful work.

We will design and support AI systems that help people become more capable, creative, productive, and resilient.

Our goal is not to replace human purpose, judgment, or dignity. Our goal is to help people do work that is more meaningful, valuable, and beneficial.

We will give special attention to projects that help create, preserve, or transform work in ways that benefit people and communities.

We believe AI should expand opportunity rather than concentrate benefit among only a few.

Commitment 6

We use technology as a tool for service.

We will not pursue technology for its own sake.

Every major initiative should be able to answer a simple question: how does this help people, strengthen communities, support responsible innovation, or care for the Earth?

If a technology is impressive but does not serve the mission, it is not enough.

Commitment 7

We steward energy, compute, and creation responsibly.

We recognize that AI consumes real energy and physical resources.

Because of this, we will work toward AI infrastructure that is increasingly efficient, renewable, and environmentally responsible.

We will seek to reduce waste, improve efficiency, support renewable energy, protect human and animal life, and care for plants, wildlife, land, water, and the Earth we all share.

We may not achieve this perfectly at every stage, but we will keep moving in that direction with seriousness and transparency.

Commitment 8

We measure real-world impact honestly.

We will evaluate our work by the positive outcomes it creates, not merely by activity, attention, or technical achievement.

We will seek to measure whether our projects help people gain skills, create opportunities, strengthen communities, improve productivity, reduce waste, support renewable energy, and protect human and environmental well-being.

We will not confuse visibility with impact.

Commitment 9

We create value before seeking recognition.

We will focus first on creating real value for others.

Recognition, funding, partnerships, and growth should follow from genuine service and demonstrated usefulness, not from hype or self-promotion.

Our work should make people and communities stronger.

Commitment 10

We communicate with humble integrity.

We believe words matter, and we will do our best to communicate with honesty, courage, and humility.

We are a visionary organization, and we believe it is good to speak boldly about what we hope to build. Many good things begin as ideas, dreams, prototypes, and possibilities before they become reality.

At the same time, we recognize that human beings are imperfect. We might overstate things, misunderstand things, communicate unclearly, or speak with more confidence than we should. Our intention is never to mislead, but mistakes will be made as we pursue great aspirations.

When this happens, we will do our best to learn, clarify, correct, and improve in our pursuit of integrity.

We will do our best to distinguish between what is already true, what is being built, what is experimental, and what is aspirational.

We do not claim perfect communication.
We commit to pursuing truth, correction, and integrity over time.

Closing Commitment

What we strive for in practice

We will seek truth humbly, act courageously, create value generously, steward creation responsibly, measure results honestly, learn from mistakes, and improve continually.

We are not claiming perfection.
Technology changes. Principles endure.

Our commitments help us live those principles in practice.
